How to Make Whipped Butter

This might be the easiest recipe to date. When whipped butter is served at restaurants it takes the experience to another level and completely elevates that basket of complimentary bread, doesn’t it? Now you can have that experience at home with just three simple ingredients and less than 5 minutes!

The ingredients you’ll need to make whipped honey butter are:

  • High-quality Unsalted Butter – I prefer using unsalted so I can add my own amount of salt, however, you can absolutely use salted if you prefer! High-quality butter will yield the most flavorful whipped butter.
  • Honey – the honey flavor will shine through, so use your favorite kind!
  • Salt – again, with so few ingredients, quality matters! I prefer a high-quality sea salt.

Step 1: simply take room temperature butter and use the mixer to whip it until it is light and fluffy. The easiest way to make whipped butter is using an electric mixer. You can use either a hand mixer or a stand mixer – either will work!

It is important that your butter is at room temperature so it can whip up to the perfect texture. When pressed with medium pressure from your finger, the butter should indent, but not sink in. If it is too soft, it won’t whip properly. Place it back in the fridge for 5-10 minutes if it’s too soft.

Step 2: Add the honey. Of course, this is how we make honey butter – the honey! I find the texture is best when the butter is first whipped, and then the honey can be combined fully throughout.

Add the honey into the already whipped butter, continuing to beat it until fully combined, light, and airy. Add the salt at this point too, if you haven’t already when whipping the butter (either will work!).

Storage Tips

Whipped Butter can be kept at room temperature for a few days, and then should be stored in the fridge. Similar to regular butter storage, the general rule is that yes, butter can eventually go bad at room temperature so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Use your best judgment and read more about butter storage from The Kitchn.

Store it in an airtight container for both room temperature and fridge storage. I like to keep it in a small mason jar that is easy to scoop out of using a knife or spoon.

Honey Butter is best served at room temperature for easy spreading, so if you’ve stored it in the fridge, let it come to room temperature before using it for best results.

How long will it last?

Whipped Honey Butter will last quite a long time if stored properly in the fridge. It’s important to note the expiration date on the butter you’re using, but overall the butter should last for several months in the fridge. It’s guaranteed to be gone before then, though!

Flavor Addition Ideas

There are so many ways to add flavor to this homemade sweet butter! Adapt it to your favorite flavors or one that will complement a specific recipe. Here are a few ideas for you to whisk in with the honey:

  • Cinnamon
  • Pumpkin Spice
  • Vanilla Bean Paste or Extract
  • Seedless Jam

Instructions

  • Soften the butter to room temperature if it is not already. This is important for it to whip properly. It should be soft enough to leave an indent when pressed with your finger, but not so soft it deeply pushes down.
  • Using an electric mixer, begin to beat the butter until it is smooth. Drizzle in honey and salt while continuing to beat for 2-3 minutes until light, creamy, and smooth.
  • Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for 1-2 days, then place in the fridge for longer storage. Let come to room temperature before serving so it will easily spread.
