3 Types of Salt You Need to Know About


When it comes to cooking, salt matters. Learn about several types of salt you can cook with and their differences, so you can unlock the flavor of foods!

Why is salt important?

At its most basic explanation, salt is a mineral. It is essential to keep our bodies functioning properly, but it’s also the key component in bringing out flavor in foods. It greatly influences how we perceive the flavor of foods.

A very popular cooking salt; it's coarser than table salt with asymmetrical crystals. It evenly salts food and is slower to dissolve.

Kosher Salt

Use it in almost all cooking, but especially to season meats, fish, and vegetables.

Kosher Salt

Harvested from the ocean by evaporating the salt water. Unique salt crystals with trace amounts of minerals, it's minimally processed.

Sea Salt

Find it in fine or coarse.

Sea Salt

Coarse is similar to kosher salt to flavor dishes as they cook.

Fine is similar to table salt and is excellent for cooking and seasoning foods in layers.

Sea Salt Flakes

Also comes in flakes, which are amazing to use as garnishes, and on bagels!

Table Salt

Fine, granulated white salt - it's the stuff you find in salt shakers. It's highly processed, mined from underground deposits.

If you're gonna use it, use it for baking recipes.

Why Density Matters

The density of salt varies by type. With more density, it's heavier, and there's more salt per unit.

This is most important when substituting salts in recipes with specific amounts. Foods could be too salty, or under-salted.

Properly Salt Your Food!

Salt unlocks the flavor in foods, so the one thing you can do to make a delicious dish, is salt it properly.

It's not about a dish being salty, it's about having well-salted, flavorful food.


Layer in the salt - add it bit by bit (like in soups), and be sure to taste test.

If it seems lacking, add another pinch of salt! This takes practice.
